INVESTIGATION PROJECT
M1.1.C/C.S./022/2019/01 – PRO-SCIENTIA – GOVERNO REGIONAL DOS AÇORES
Description
With a biennial duration (2020-2022), this Social Sciences research, focus mostly in the azorean islands of S. Miguel and Terceira, and aims to gather information about the professional activities performed by womenthroughtout a period of deep transformation (final decades of the Monarchy and First Republic). Integrated in Gender Studies, articulated with Economic and Social History, it will highlight female figures and roles, as well as their contribution to the island's economic, social and cultural growth . By crossing different archival sources (press, travel reports, booklets, letters, photographs), it also intends to analyze issues of gender (in)equality, producing a new look at insular social dynamics, through female work, that not always correspond to past stereotypes of domesticity and passivity. In Arts, in Litterature, in Education; in Commerce and in Restoration; in Health or Journalism, in areas seen as unfeminine, there are several Azorean women , who need to be better knowed and studied. It is also important to include the many weavers, embroiderers, seamstresses, washerwomen, maids, nannies or working women who, with their slim incomes, fermented the family budget. In addition to scientific research and production, it is expected the continuous dissemination of results through social networks (instagram @trabalhonofeminino) and the local press; the creation of this website; lectures and other educational activities in schools; the preparation of a video about the project and the studied female figures, to be made available through CHAM's - Humanities Center (NOVA Univ. Lisbon / Univ. of the Azores) Youtube channel; the organisation of an international seminar, which will result in the publication of an e-book.
